The Writer's Kit: The Magna Carta

If you know NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), you might know the book NO PLOT? NO PROBLEM, by NaNo creator, Chris Baty.

It is a fun, witty read, yet contains one of the single, most invaluable approaches to writing I've ever utilized. He calls it The Magna Carta.

This exercise asks: "What, to you, makes a good novel?" (pg. 86)

The list defines, in bare bones, everything you want in your book. I literally wrote down everything, like, a hundred bullet points. Magically, your book will contain this list. It's amazing, which is why it's in my Writer's Kit!

Baty also expounds on snacks (essential!)

The Writer's Kit: Scrivener

Scrivener is a writing software designed to keep your book neat and organized as you write. It's like spring cleaning and opening windows, letting fresh air and sunlight into the writing-room of your mind. Everything is tidy, you can see your story in pieces, as a whole, from various angles. It's a delight!

I'm a meticulous plotter and outliner. I need color-codes, charts, maps, and order wherever I can get. Writing is a sticky business, and my thoughts get muddled so fast. Plots twist and tangle, ideas play hide-and-seek, multiply, fight, change, lose significance, gain importance--it's exhausting to keep track! Scrivener helps keep all of that in check. $40 well spent. (Website here.)
